The former NFL player was with the Colts for two seasons before he retired from the sport.

Matt Ulrich, a former offensive guard for the Indianapolis Colts, has died. He was 41.

The team’s owner, Jim Irsay, confirmed Ulrich’s passing in a social media post he shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Matt Ulrich. Matt was with us only two seasons, but left his mark on many,” Irsay shared. “Great guy, I hear he was a great dad—and he was a Super Bowl champ. My prayers to his family.”

Ulrich, born Dec. 30, 1981 in Streamwood, Illinois, attended Northwestern and signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2005, where he played for two seasons and won Super Bowl XLI against the Chicago Bears before he retired from the sport.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said of playing the Super Bowl while speaking with MontanaSports.com in 2019. “Definitely one of the best memories, just being on the field with your teammates, especially that game.”

“Seeing the confetti come down Colts colors and being able to hold the Lombardi Trophy, everyone being on the field, I had to remind myself to take one moment for myself,” Ulrich continued, “It was good advice I got from someone that, if you do win it, take that last moment to look back at the tunnel and just look at the scoreboard, look at the field, and just know you’re at the pinnacle of sports. And that’s quite an awesome feeling.”

After retiring from football, Ulrich co-founded DexaFit, a brand of body fat and metabolic testing centers in the U.S., and served as the managing director and partner with Profitable Ideas Exchange in Bozeman, Montana. He is also listed as a player advisor for The Football Players Health Study at Harvard University.

The former NFL star is survived by wife Alison Ulrich and their four sons.

An official cause of death has not been released.
