The late MLB star won two World Series titles while with the Boston Red Sox.

The sports world is mourning a legend.

On Sunday, October 1, the Boston Red Sox told everyone that their dear old teammate, Tim Wakefield, had passed away. He was only 57 years old.

The Red Sox, on a social media platform called X (like Twitter), said, “We’re really sad about Tim Wakefield. He was a great person – a loving husband, dad, and teammate. He was also a popular sports commentator and did a lot for his community.

The special message went on, saying, “Tim Wakefield really poured his heart into the game and for all of us Red Sox fans. We send our strongest love and kind thoughts to Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the whole Wakefield family.”

Because he passed away, the Red Sox changed their pictures on social media to show Wakefield’s old jersey number, which was 49.

John Henry, who’s the main owner of the baseball team, shared his own thoughts. He said, “Tim was not only a great player with his special knuckleball, but he was also incredibly kind and determined.”

“He didn’t just impress us on the field, but he left a lasting mark on many people’s lives with his warmth and genuine personality,” Henry continued. “He had an extraordinary gift to lift people up, motivate them, and make connections in a way that showed us what true greatness is. He represented the absolute best of being a part of the Boston Red Sox, and his passing is a heavy loss for all of us.

Just a few days ago, Curt Schilling, a former teammate of Wakefield, talked about on his podcast that Wakefield and his wife Stacy were both fighting cancer.

The Red Sox later confirmed that the couple was dealing with health problems, but they didn’t say exactly what. They said, “We know people have been asking about Tim and Stacy Wakefield’s health. Unfortunately, this information was shared publicly without their agreement. Their health is a very personal matter that they wanted to keep private as they go through treatment and face this illness. Tim and Stacy are grateful for the support and love they’ve always received, and they’re asking for some space and privacy right now.
