Chicago Bulls Legend Bob Love Dies at 81 After Battling Cancer
Bob Love, a basketball icon and one of the Chicago Bulls’ early stars, has passed away at 81 after a long fight with cancer, as reported by Men’s Journal. Love, a three-time NBA All-Star, played for the Bulls for nine seasons starting in 1968, leading the team in scoring for seven of them.
He was also known for his defense and was selected to the NBA All-Defensive team three times. In 1994, the Bulls retired his No. 10 jersey, making him only the second player in team history to receive this honor.
The Bulls remembered Love as more than just a player. Men’s Journal highlights that the team called him a “true legend” in their tribute, noting how his achievements on the court and his work in the community left a lasting impact. His motivational speeches and charity work touched many lives.
Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf described Love as a cornerstone of the franchise. According to Men’s Journal, Reinsdorf praised Love’s toughness and resilience, which not only defined his basketball career but also his personal journey.
After leaving the NBA, Love faced struggles due to a severe stuttering problem. He worked as a dishwasher and busboy until he got help from a speech therapist in the 1980s. With this support, he overcame his speech challenges and became a motivational speaker.
In 1992, the Bulls hired him as the director of community affairs, where he inspired young people with his speeches. Men’s Journal emphasizes that his story of resilience inspired countless fans and teenagers alike.
Love’s life was full of challenges and triumphs. He married his wife, Rachel Dixon, in 1995 during a special ceremony on the Bulls’ court.
