A judge in Georgia has blocked seven new election rules supported by Donald Trump, saying they would interfere with the voting process. Judge Thomas Cox ruled that the rules went against the state’s election laws, making them illegal.

One rule would have required ballots to be counted by hand, while others focused on how election results should be confirmed. These changes were criticized for possibly slowing down vote counting.

Georgia started early voting with a record turnout, showing how important the state is for the upcoming election. Over 459,000 people voted on the first day, much higher than in 2020.

Trump, who lost Georgia in that election by a small margin, is facing legal troubles for trying to change the outcome of the 2020 results.

A key part of this is a phone call where he asked Georgia’s Secretary of State to find more votes for him.

Another judge, Robert McBurney, also ruled against the hand-counting rule, saying it would cause confusion and reduce public trust in the voting process, reminding everyone of the tensions after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Harris’s campaign supported the rulings, arguing that the proposed changes were attempts to create doubt in the election.

Georgia, a crucial state in the race between Kamala Harris and Trump, is expected to play a big role in deciding the next president of the United States.
