Russia could end the war in Ukraine right now, said UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, making it clear that Russia started the conflict.

This statement came after President Vladimir Putin warned that Western missiles fired into Russia would escalate the war. BBC reports that Putin said this would be seen as direct involvement by NATO countries, including the U.S. and Europe.

Sir Keir Starmer, currently in Washington for discussions with U.S. President Joe Biden, emphasized that Russia illegally invaded Ukraine, and they could stop the war at any moment.

BBC says Ukraine’s allies, including the U.K., are discussing whether to allow Ukraine to use Western missiles to strike inside Russia.

Putin responded to these discussions by saying such missile strikes would be a direct act of war by NATO, not just Ukraine, according to the BBC.

He argued that Ukraine cannot use these high-tech missiles without NATO’s help, suggesting it would pull NATO directly into the conflict. He warned Russia would take action based on any new threats.

BBC also noted that with Russia receiving increased support from Iran and winter approaching, opinions on allowing Ukraine to fire Western missiles into Russia are shifting.

The situation remains delicate, with important decisions expected in the coming weeks.

While Prime Minister Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy engage in global talks about Ukraine, BBC explains that Starmer reiterated Russia is the one responsible for the conflict and can stop it anytime.

The U.K. and other allies are cautious about actions that could provoke a wider war, with ongoing discussions on how to handle Russia’s growing military ties with Iran.
