Snacking can actually be good for your heart if you follow the right advice, according to Parade. While snacking often gets a bad reputation due to unhealthy options like cookies and chips, cardiologists say that eating the right snacks can support heart health, Parade shared.
Dr. Kimberly Campbell, a cardiologist at Cardiology Consultants of Philadelphia, explained to Parade that healthy snacks can help prevent hunger cravings that lead to bad food choices. Dr. Mohanakrishnan Sathyamoorthy, a cardiologist and Chair of Internal Medicine at Burnett School of Medicine at Texas Christian University, told Parade that he incorporates snacks like nuts and whole grains into his daily routine to stay energized and keep his heart healthy.
Parade highlighted that scientific research shows snacking on nutrient-rich foods can help lower bad cholesterol and prevent overeating later in the day.
Dr. Sathyamoorthy’s go-to snack, as mentioned in Parade, includes raw almonds, walnuts, and blueberries because they are high in omega-3s and antioxidants, which are great for heart health.
Dr. Campbell also told Parade that she likes to pair protein with fresh, in-season vegetables like cherry tomatoes or cucumbers for her mid-morning snack.
She advised choosing minimally processed foods and enjoying snack time without rushing, Parade noted.
