American actress Gena Rowlands, known for her roles in films like The Notebook and Another Woman, has died at age 94.

She passed away at her home in Indian Wells, California. Although no specific cause of death was provided, she had been battling Alzheimer’s disease.

Rowlands, who retired from acting in 2015, had an impressive career with four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, and two Oscar nominations.

She starred in several notable films, including A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria, both directed by her late husband, John Cassavetes.

In addition to her film career, Rowlands had a successful stage career, including roles in Broadway productions like The Seven Year Itch and Middle of the Night. In 2015, she received an honorary Academy Award for her contributions to acting.

Her son, Nick Cassavetes, directed her in The Notebook in 2004 and recently shared how his mother, who had Alzheimer’s, brought authenticity to her role portraying a character with dementia.

He reflected on how their personal experience with the disease mirrored the story they told in the film.
