Zambia is grieving after a tragic bus accident claimed the lives of seven players from Chavuma Town Council FC.
The players were traveling to a football match in the northwest of the country when the crash happened on Saturday.
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) expressed their “deep shock” and is working with local authorities to gather more information about the incident .
In addition to the fatalities, twelve other people were injured in the crash. Five of the injured were taken to the capital, Lusaka, for medical treatment. The names of those who died and those hurt have not yet been made public .
Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), shared his condolences, saying, “I hope and pray that those injured will fully recover soon.”
He offered his sympathy to the families of the deceased players, wishing them peace in this difficult time .
Artur de Almeida e Silva, who leads the regional football associations in Southern Africa, called the loss of young lives “truly heartbreaking.”
He noted that football brings joy and unity to communities, emphasizing that they share in the grief of those mourning this significant loss. He also extended thoughts and prayers to those still being treated for their injuries .
This accident is a reminder of the dangers athletes can face while traveling, even in pursuit of their passion.
The community’s response shows the strength of support in times of tragedy, with many coming together to mourn and heal .
