X Faces Ban in Brazil After Missing Judge’s Deadline

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is likely to be banned in Brazil after missing a deadline set by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The company was required to appoint a new legal representative and address fines related to disinformation issues.

X had previously shut down its office in Brazil, citing threats of arrest against its representative and describing the demands as “censorship.” This conflict began in April when Judge de Moraes ordered the suspension of several X accounts accused of spreading false information. X owner Elon Musk has criticized de Moraes as a “tyrant” and “dictator.”

After the deadline passed, X made it clear that it had not complied with the order. The company claimed that Judge de Moraes’ demands would force it to break Brazilian laws, and it vowed to publish details of the judge’s orders for transparency.

In addition to this, Starlink, another company owned by Musk, has had its bank accounts frozen in Brazil. Starlink argued that it should not be held responsible for fines against X and pointed out that it is a separate entity from X.

This situation is part of a broader trend where social media companies face scrutiny and pressure from Brazilian authorities, as seen with previous temporary bans on Telegram and WhatsApp for failing to comply with legal requests.
