US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not run for re-election in 2024, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.
“I fully support Kamala as the nominee,” Biden wrote on X, urging Democrats to unite against Trump. Although Harris is the likely candidate, it’s not official yet.
Several Democratic leaders, such as Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and California Governor Gavin Newsom, have supported Harris.
Whitmer has been praised for her progressive policies and Newsom is known for his strong support of Biden.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, known for handling crises effectively, also backs Harris.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, with high approval ratings, and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, known for his strong criticism of Trump, have voiced their support for Harris as well.
Other potential running mates include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and Senators Amy Klobuchar, Cory Booker, and Raphael Warnock.
All these names are being considered as Democrats prepare for the Democratic National Convention next month to officially confirm Biden’s replacement and the vice-presidential candidate.
