Joe Biden’s campaign is facing increasing doubts and pressure from top Democrats.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have all privately expressed concerns about Biden running for re-election.
Even former President Barack Obama has reportedly said Biden’s chances of winning are low. High-ranking Congressman Jamie Raskin compared Biden to a tired baseball pitcher in a public letter.
Biden, 81, insists he is not stepping down and wants to focus on defeating Donald Trump. However, calls for him to exit are growing louder from Democratic politicians, donors, and voters.
It started with Texas Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who urged Biden to withdraw, followed by Senator Peter Welch from Vermont and Senator Jon Tester from Montana.
Many other representatives, such as Arizona’s Raul Grijalva, Massachusetts’ Seth Moulton, and Illinois’ Mike Quigley, have also voiced their concerns. They argue that Biden cannot effectively campaign or communicate his accomplishments.
More prominent Democrats, including former President Obama, former Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan, and actor George Clooney, have also called for Biden to step down. Clooney even wrote an article in The New York Times stating Biden cannot beat time.
While some Democrats, like Vice-President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom, still support Biden, many others are urging him to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders.
According to BBC, the situation within the Democratic Party is tense, with a growing number of voices urging Biden to consider stepping aside for the good of the party and the country.
