A lawyer for the victims of two deadly Boeing 737 Max crashes told the BBC that the US government plans to give Boeing a very favorable plea deal.

The deal includes a small fine, three years of probation, and independent safety audits.

Paul Cassell said he got this information from the Justice Department. Boeing did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment, and the Justice Department did not give a statement.

Last week, US prosecutors recommended charging Boeing criminally, as the company had violated a 2021 agreement related to the crashes that killed 346 people.

Cassell said the families of the victims will strongly oppose this plea deal, saying it doesn’t bring enough justice for the 346 people who died.

The crashes involved Boeing’s 737 Max aircraft and happened within six months of each other: one with Indonesia’s Lion Air in October 2018 and the other with Ethiopian Airlines in March 2019.
