Renowned US musician and producer Steve Albini, famous for his work with bands like Nirvana, The Pixies, and PJ Harvey, has passed away at 61.

Albini was a key figure in the indie music scene during the 1980s and 90s, leading bands like Big Black and Shellac.

He produced and engineered thousands of albums, including influential ones like The Pixies’ Surfer Rosa and Nirvana’s In Utero.

Despite initially not being a fan of Nirvana, he worked on In Utero, giving it a raw sound that wasn’t initially appreciated by their record label.

Albini preferred to be credited as an engineer rather than a producer, and he charged flat fees instead of royalties, believing it unethical to profit indefinitely from artists’ work.

He owned and operated his studio, Electrical Audio, in Chicago.

This news highlights Albini’s significant contributions to the music industry and his principles as a producer.

It also underscores his impact on shaping the sound of iconic albums and his legacy within the indie music scene.
