The US Congress leaders have agreed on how much money to spend for the rest of 2024 to prevent a government shutdown.
The total is $1.6 trillion, with $886 billion for defense and over $704 billion for other expenses. However, there’s some disagreement on the numbers.
The deal needs approval from the House of Representatives and Senate before the January 19 deadline. Republicans wanted to cut spending, but the deal includes more protection for benefits and health, demanded by Democrats.
Some conservatives criticized the agreement, calling it a “total failure.” President Biden sees it as a step to avoid a shutdown.
Negotiations continue on other issues, like military aid to Ukraine and security aid to Israel.
