UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer urged Iran to avoid attacking Israel during a call with Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
Starmer expressed concerns about the risk of a bigger conflict in the region and emphasized the need for calm. This was the first time a UK prime minister had spoken with an Iranian president since 2021.
The UK, along with the US, France, Italy, and Germany, issued a joint statement urging Iran to stop threatening Israel.
They warned that an attack could have serious consequences for regional security. The leaders also voiced their support for Israel’s defense against potential Iranian aggression and attacks from groups backed by Iran.
As reported by the BBC, tensions have been rising after recent assassinations of leaders from Hezbollah and Hamas.
The US has responded by sending military reinforcements, including a submarine and an aircraft carrier, to the region. A spokesperson from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that Israel is fully prepared for any potential attacks.
Starmer also told Iran’s president that he was deeply worried about the situation in the region and called for all parties to de-escalate and avoid further confrontation.
The BBC noted that Iran has vowed to retaliate for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, whom it blames on Israel.
The situation remains tense as world leaders, including Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, are advising their citizens to leave Lebanon due to the escalating conflict .
