Climate Change: Fewer Wild Swans Returning to UK for Winter

The traditional sight of wild swans migrating to the UK in winter is diminishing due to climate change. Bewick’s swans, known for their distinctive markings, are altering their behavior in response to a warming world.

The latest arrivals, Maisie and Maifield, signal a decline in numbers from 700 to just over 100 since monitoring began in 1965. With winters becoming milder, the swans now prefer staying in Germany and the Netherlands, posing the risk that they may stop returning to Britain altogether.

The global population is also threatened by deliberate killing, lead poisoning, and habitat loss. This long-term study at Slimbridge provides valuable insights into the impact of climate change on wildlife. Credit to BBC for the information.
