British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after their luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning. The yacht, named Bayesian, was carrying 22 people when it capsized due to a severe storm that caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air, to form over the sea.
Fifteen people were rescued, including a one-year-old girl. Authorities are still searching for the missing individuals, including Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and the yacht’s chef. Local media reported that the yacht’s anchor was down during the storm, which led to the mast breaking and the boat sinking near the village of Porticello.
The sinking occurred amid severe storms affecting the Mediterranean, as noted by BBC Weather. Divers have found the wreckage 50 meters underwater and are continuing their search. The British Foreign Office and Marine Accident Investigation Branch are involved in supporting the families and investigating the incident.
Lynch, known for co-founding the software company Autonomy, recently faced legal challenges but was acquitted of fraud charges in the U.S. earlier this year. His wife, Angela Bacares, is listed as the yacht’s owner and has been rescued. The incident has drawn significant media attention and prompted a search effort that includes both local and international teams, according to BBC.
