Someone shot and killed Gilberto Hernandez, a player from Panama, in the city of Colon. The attackers have not been identified, according to the police on Monday.
Hernandez, who played two games for Panama in March, including a friendly against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, passed away on Sunday. The police reported that he was shot by someone from a moving car.
In the incident, six other people were also hurt.
Crime rates in Colon, a city about 50 miles north of Panama City, have risen due to conflicts between rival drug groups, authorities say.
Hernandez, aged 26, was a player for the Panamanian team Club Atletico Independiente (CAI).
The police mentioned on Monday that they had arrested a suspect linked to the shooting after carrying out a series of searches and operations in Colon.
The Panamanian Football Federation (FEPAFUT) also expressed their condolences to Hernandez’s family and friends, as well as to CAI and the wider Panamanian soccer community, on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. They said, “We wish peace for his soul.”
