A Black student in Texas got suspended twice for his loc hairstyle, which goes against the school’s rules. Darryl George has been kept out of school for over two weeks because of this. The school says boys’ hair shouldn’t be longer than their eyebrows or ear lobes.
The family needs to meet with the school by Wednesday, the lawyer said.
The family thinks the school might want to kick him out, but they won’t agree to it. They were told that if he didn’t cut his hair, he’d be sent to a different kind of school.
The school won’t talk about this situation. Darryl, who’s in 11th grade, got in trouble for having his locs in a ponytail. This happened the same week a new law against hair discrimination came into effect.
His family might take legal action. They were told that his actions broke the school’s rules. The rules say boys’ hair can’t go past their t-shirt collar or be in a style that goes below their eyebrows or ears when it’s down.
At first, the school talked to him about his locs and also his frayed jeans, which are not allowed. They said he could change his clothes, but he’d also have to cut his hair. Since he didn’t cut it, he had to stay on school suspension.
