Starbucks Iced Drink Cups Are Changing at Some Stores, and Not Everyone Is Happy About It
Starbucks fans who love their Iced Shaken Espresso or Pink Drink will see a big change at some locations. Starbucks is introducing new “cold cups” at select stores, and not everyone is excited. Instead of the clear plastic cups, iced drinks will now be served in white, fiber-based compostable cups. This change responds to pollution and waste laws, as reported by USA Today.
Beth Nervig, senior manager of social impact communications at Starbucks, stated, “Based on local mandates, customers at 24 stores will be served their favorite Starbucks beverage in fiber-based compostable cold cups.” These stores are in California and Minnesota.
Some Starbucks fans are unhappy with the new cups. TikTok creator @heybayhey’s video about the new cups went viral, where she said she was “flabbergasted” by the change, comparing the new cup to a “spaceship or a UFO.” Many commenters agreed, especially about not being able to see the drink inside. One asked, “How am I supposed to tell if it’s the right color?” Another said, “This is enough to make me go to Dunkin’.”
If your local Starbucks has the new cups, you can bring your own reusable cup. Nervig noted that customers at participating stores in the U.S. and Canada who bring a clean, personal cup will get a $0.10 discount on their drink. In the U.S., Starbucks Rewards members will also receive 25 Bonus Stars.
