Legal Action Against Luis Rubiales for Alleged Misconduct.
A prosecutor has officially accused Luis Rubiales, the suspended president of Spain’s football federation, of sexual assault and coercion. This accusation comes after Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso without her consent following Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory. Hermoso has now filed a formal complaint about the incident.
The prosecutor stated that Hermoso informed them that Rubiales and his associates pressured her family to support his actions. They are now calling for both Rubiales and Hermoso to provide statements.
Before this incident, Rubiales was seen engaging in inappropriate behavior during celebrations after Spain’s victory against England. The high court will review the complaint and decide whether to proceed with an investigation. If it does, a judge will lead the inquiry and determine if the case should go to trial.
Under Spanish law, a sexual assault charge can result in fines or up to four years in prison. Due to the international nature of the incident, the high court is handling the case. FIFA has temporarily suspended Rubiales and launched disciplinary proceedings against him. In response to the controversy, World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda was dismissed.
Many coaches and players resigned in protest, and public figures have called for Rubiales’ resignation. Demonstrations have also taken place outside the football federation’s headquarters, urging him to step down.
