Senegal’s newly inaugurated President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has appointed the leader of the main opposition party, Ousmane Sonko, as his prime minister.

Sonko, who was previously imprisoned alongside President Faye, will now hold a key position in the new government.

This unexpected move comes after both leaders were granted amnesty by outgoing President Macky Sall.

The decision aims to promote national unity and reconciliation following a period of political unrest.
