US Actors’ Union Sag-Aftra Ends Hollywood Strike with $1bn Win
After a month of a tentative deal, Sag-Aftra officially ended the Hollywood strike that began on July 14. The union reported a 78% member approval for the multi-year contract, securing $1bn in compensation, AI protections, and other benefits.
Fran Drescher, the union president, called it a “golden age for Sag-Aftra.” The deal, though not perfect, includes an 11% pay increase for background actors, a $40m residual bonus for successful streaming projects, and new industry standards for diverse representation and on-set professionalism.
The strike, the longest in the union’s history, took a toll on the industry, costing over $6.5bn to the California economy.
The ratified contract is seen as a significant victory for actors, addressing their financial concerns and providing safeguards against emerging industry challenges. (Source: BBC News)
