Water Safety Alert Issued Near German Military Base Amid Sabotage Concerns

Authorities in Mechernich, near Bonn, Germany, warned 10,000 residents on Thursday night to avoid using tap water after discovering damage to a fence at a water storage site. The alert was part of an investigation into possible sabotage. By Friday morning, the all-clear was given, but people were advised to boil their water before drinking.

The scare followed a separate incident where abnormal water values were detected at an air force base near Cologne-Bonn airport, which was sealed off for several hours. Additionally, NATO reported an attempted breach at its base in Geilenkirchen, close to the Dutch border.

The damage to the water site and other security breaches come amid heightened concerns over potential Russian sabotage, especially given Germany’s support for Ukraine. No suspects have been arrested yet. The incidents are taken seriously by military officials, and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has highlighted the growing threat of espionage and sabotage in Germany.

Residents quickly bought bottled water as a precaution, with local fire brigades spreading the warning. The German military is on high alert following these incidents, reflecting broader security concerns due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

BBC reports that the situation has heightened fears of potential Russian sabotage, which has been a growing concern in recent months.
