On Friday, the UN raised a serious alarm about really bad human rights abuses happening in Sudan’s Darfur area. They said it’s getting close to being downright evil. This is happening as the fighting between the army and paramilitary groups has been going on for seven months now.

Clementine Nkweta-Salami, a UN official, expressed deep concern about the terrible situation in Sudan, saying they are struggling to find words to describe the horror. She mentioned reports of awful things like sexual violence, disappearances, and violations of human and children’s rights, even calling it “pure evil.” There are fears of a repeat of the tragic events from the early 2000s.

The conflict in Sudan involves the army and paramilitary groups, causing a lot of suffering. The UN refugee agency shared reports of armed groups killing people in West Darfur, where the situation has recently worsened. They are also worried about a possible influx of refugees into Chad.

UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi echoed these concerns, comparing the current situation to the atrocities that happened two decades ago. More than 10,000 people have already lost their lives in the conflict, with millions displaced. The fear is that the true extent of the suffering is even worse than what’s officially reported.
