Mark Robinson, the Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina, was recently treated in the hospital for burns after an incident at a campaign event.
His team didn’t share many details but said Robinson suffered second-degree burns while attending the Mayberry Truck Show. Despite the injury, they mentioned he’s recovering well and will resume his public campaign soon.
This comes at a time when Robinson is already facing significant challenges. Some of his top advisors recently quit his campaign after accusations surfaced that he posted offensive comments on a porn website over ten years ago, allegedly calling himself “Black Nazi” and claiming he preferred Hitler over then-President Barack Obama.
Robinson, who is campaigning to become North Carolina’s first Black governor, denies these allegations and called them “tabloid lies.”
Robinson has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, who once compared him to Martin Luther King Jr., saying Robinson is “MLK on steroids.”
However, since the accusations were made public, Trump hasn’t been seen with Robinson at campaign events, even though he’s held two rallies in North Carolina.
When asked about his support for Robinson, Trump said he wasn’t fully aware of the situation.
Kamala Harris’ campaign has also used this controversy to gain political ground, releasing a video to highlight the issue. Polls show both Harris and Trump are very close in North Carolina, a critical state in the upcoming election.
Robinson’s campaign is facing pressure from state Republicans and reportedly from Trump’s team as well, with some calling for him to drop out of the race.
His recovery from the burn incident may bring some temporary relief, but the allegations remain a significant hurdle for his political ambitions.
