The chief of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) called the people causing violence in Belfast “thugs and criminals spreading lies.”
In a message to Muslims in Northern Ireland, Chief Constable Jon Boutcher promised that PSNI officers would “stand by you” and “protect you.”
In a YouTube video, he said he and other officers met with mosque leaders in Belfast to hear their worries. He acknowledged that Muslims are living in fear and assured them that the PSNI is committed to their safety.
He condemned the racist attacks by people with extreme right-wing views and urged victims to let the police handle these crimes.
This message comes after several nights of violence in Belfast, including racist attacks and rioting. Businesses were targeted following an anti-immigration protest at Belfast City Hall, and more unrest occurred on Monday and Tuesday. A woman’s home in Ballyclare was also attacked on Wednesday.
The BBC reports that six more people were charged with offenses related to the Belfast disorder. Three men were charged with crimes such as criminal damage and incitement to hatred, and three boys were charged with riotous behavior.
According to the BBC, the PSNI is increasing police presence on the streets due to concerns about more racially motivated attacks.
Officer shifts are being adjusted, and rest days are canceled to ensure more officers are available. Chief Constable Boutcher will update the Northern Ireland Executive about the situation.
Police don’t believe loyalist paramilitary groups are organizing the violence, but some known figures from these groups have participated in the protests.
There have been rising tensions, especially around housing issues fueled by anti-immigration sentiments
. The recent violence was triggered by misinformation about the Southport stabbings, which led to protests and trouble in England .
