Papua New Guinea’s Petroleum Minister, Jimmy Maladina, has been charged with assault after a reported domestic dispute in Australia.

Police said a 31-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by a 58-year-old man, identified as Mr. Maladina, in Sydney on Saturday morning. The woman suffered facial injuries.

Mr. Maladina, who was granted conditional bail, will appear in court on July 11. In a statement, he acknowledged the media reports and said he was cooperating with authorities.

He emphasized his commitment to addressing the situation with integrity and transparency, condemning violence in any form.

As a key adviser to President James Marape and a central figure in Papua New Guinea’s natural gas projects, Mr. Maladina’s charge is significant.

He became the country’s petroleum minister earlier this year and holds a powerful position.

This incident highlights the importance of accountability and high standards of conduct for public officials. It also raises awareness about domestic violence, stressing that it is unacceptable regardless of one’s status.
