Oxford University has announced a five-year partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, one of the most well-known artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the world.
According to BBC, this partnership will give Oxford students and staff access to AI technology and funding to improve teaching, learning, and research.
One major part of this deal is that some of the Bodleian Library’s public collection, which includes historical documents, will be turned into digital copies so that people around the world can access them online. BBC reports that this is an important step in making valuable knowledge more widely available.
Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, told BBC that working with universities is essential for making sure AI benefits everyone.
As part of the project, Oxford researchers will be able to use OpenAI’s newest AI models, including a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for educational use. They will also be able to apply for research funding to work on AI-related projects.
BBC highlights that this partnership could speed up Oxford’s research in critical areas like healthcare and climate change. Professor Patrick Grant, who oversees research at Oxford, said that AI is helping scientists make discoveries faster and analyze complex data more easily. Another big advantage of this project is that some of the Bodleian Library’s collections, which were previously not available online, will now be accessible to people worldwide. He added that the library has always looked for new ways to use technology to improve access to information.
