Nigeria Ends Sanctions on Niger, Reopens Borders After Coup
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has lifted economic sanctions imposed on Niger following a military coup eight months ago.
This move includes reopening borders, allowing commercial flights, and restoring electricity supply to Niger. The sanctions had led to a decline in exports from Niger to Nigeria, affecting both countries’ economies.
Last month, the regional body Ecowas decided to lift sanctions on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea after military takeovers.
Niger’s former President Mohamed Bazoum remains detained by military leaders since the coup.
This development signals a step towards normalizing relations between Nigeria and Niger, with potential implications for regional stability.
