New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban has resigned after federal agents raided his home and took his phone, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Caban’s departure follows multiple federal investigations into city officials, including him.
Mayor Adams, who has now had to find a new police commissioner for the third time in three years, appointed Tom Donlon as the interim head of the NYPD. Donlon previously worked with the FBI on high-profile cases, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
In a short press conference, Adams praised Caban for reducing crime during his time as commissioner but acknowledged that the investigation had become a distraction.
Caban’s resignation letter stated that he stepped down to avoid further disruption to the NYPD.
Caban had been in office since 2023 and was seen as a close ally of Mayor Adams. Last week, other top city officials, including the first deputy mayor and the deputy mayor for public safety, also had their homes raided.
There’s no evidence that Caban or the other officials are involved in any illegal activities, and it’s unclear if these recent investigations are connected to a previous probe into Adams’ campaign finances, which also came under federal scrutiny.
This situation is a setback for Mayor Adams and highlights ongoing concerns about corruption in the city’s administration.
