New Health Secretary Wes Streeting has described the NHS as “broken” on his first day in office, highlighting what he calls the health service’s most significant crisis in history.
emphasized that resolving these issues won’t happen quickly and announced upcoming talks with junior doctors to address their ongoing pay dispute, which the British Medical Association (BMA) has termed “positive”.
Streeting, who recently took office as part of Labour’s return to power after 14 years, emphasized the party’s commitment to urgently starting negotiations, despite previous governments avoiding acknowledgment of the NHS’s challenges.
Labour’s manifesto promises to boost NHS capacity by 40,000 weekly operations, scans, and appointments by expanding weekend services and involving the private sector, funded by tightening tax regulations.
The statement comes amid continued tensions over junior doctors’ demands for a 35% pay increase, a topic Streeting has indicated openness to discussing alongside improvements in working conditions.
