Former government official Crispin Blunt admitted he was taken into custody on Wednesday. He’s being investigated for possibly committing rape and having illegal drugs.
Crispin Blunt, a former government official, said he spoke to the police twice about the incident. He first told them about it three weeks ago because he was worried about being blackmailed. He’s helping Surrey Police with their investigation and believes he won’t be charged.
The police are still testing the substances to see if they are drugs. The Conservative Party removed Blunt from their group, so he’ll be an independent MP. He’s been told to stay away from Parliament. Blunt won the election for Reigate in 1997. He worked as a justice minister and in the whips’ office for the Conservatives. He also chaired the important Foreign Affairs Committee.
In April, he said sorry for defending Imran Ahmad Khan, an ex-MP who was found guilty of assaulting a teenager. Blunt had initially called it a “terrible mistake of justice” but later took back his words. A month later, Blunt announced he’ll step down as an MP in the next election.
‘Co-operate fully’
Mr. Blunt said he was arrested for alleged rape and drug possession, and he informed the Speaker and his chief whip. He’s been questioned twice, first three weeks ago when he reported concerns about extortion, and again after his arrest.
He believes the arrest was unnecessary as he’s willing to cooperate and expects no charges. He won’t comment further until the police finish their investigation. The police released him on bail with conditions. The Conservative Party has not commented.
Another Conservative MP in his 50s was arrested in May 2022 for various allegations and is on bail until mid-February 2024.
