A Mexican journalist named Alejandro Martínez, known for reporting on violent crime, was killed while under police protection.

Gunmen shot him as he was traveling in a car with two security guards in Guanajuato. Despite efforts to protect him after a similar attack in 2022, he died in the hospital from his injuries.

Alejandro, also called “The Son of the Lone Ranger,” ran a popular Facebook news outlet with over 340,000 followers.

Attackers fired from a pickup truck, and although his bodyguards shot back, they couldn’t save him. A woman in another car was also hit by a stray bullet.

Mexico is extremely dangerous for journalists, with over 150 killed since 1994, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Alejandro’s death follows other recent attacks on journalists, including the shooting of Federico Hans and the death of Víctor Culebro.

Alejandro had spoken about the pain of seeing increasing violence in his region. His death highlights the ongoing dangers journalists face in Mexico .
