New Zealand’s Māori King Kiingi Tuheitia Paki has died at 69, surrounded by family, after heart surgery, according to the Kiingitanga movement.

The announcement, shared on social media, marks a significant loss for Māori and the entire nation. The new Māori king will be chosen by community leaders and may not be named until after a traditional funeral lasting at least three days.

Kiingi Tuheitia, born Tūheitia Paki in 1955, became king in 2006 following his mother’s death. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised his dedication to his people and traditions.

The king had met notable figures, including King Charles III, and declined to meet Prince William and Princess Kate in 2014 due to time constraints.

The BBC reported on the king’s passing and the upcoming selection of his successor.
