A man has been found guilty of raping and killing a female doctor in India, an event that shocked the country and led to protests. Sanjay Roy, a hospital volunteer, was convicted for the crime that happened in August 2024 at a hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The doctor’s body was discovered after a long shift at the hospital, and it was clear from the injuries that she fought back.
Roy, who was drunk, reportedly attacked the doctor while she was sleeping. He was arrested the day after the incident. Following accusations that local police mishandled the case, the investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The crime caused a nationwide uproar, with many doctors and students protesting for justice and better safety for healthcare workers. Concerns were raised about violence against medical staff, as many doctors in India face abuse from patients or their families.
The case also highlighted the ongoing problem of sexual violence in India, with over 31,000 reported rapes in 2022 alone.
Activists say many cases go unreported due to social stigma and a lack of trust in the legal system. This case is similar to a high-profile 2012 incident in Delhi, which sparked global protests and led to stricter laws for rape cases in India.
The BBC reports that the court will announce Roy’s sentence soon, and there are strong calls for the death penalty in this case.
