Faith Kipyegon Calls Her Third Olympic Gold an “Incredible Honor”
Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon has called it an “incredible honor” after winning her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 1500m race at the Olympics. This victory came after she had to overcome a disqualification in the 5000m race, which was later overturned on appeal.
Kipyegon’s win was part of a successful day for African athletes. Emmanuel Wanyonyi from Kenya also won gold in the men’s 800m final, and Egypt’s Ahmed Elgendy set a world record in the men’s modern pentathlon to claim Egypt’s first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Games. Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola dominated the men’s marathon.
In addition to Kipyegon’s gold, Wanyonyi achieved the third-fastest 800m time ever, finishing just 0.01 seconds ahead of Canada’s Marco Arop.
Other notable performances included Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo helping his team to a new African record in the men’s 4x400m relay, and South Africa’s Jo-Ane van Dyk taking second place in the women’s javelin.
Egypt also saw success with Ahmed Elgendy winning gold in the modern pentathlon, marking a significant achievement after struggling with injuries in recent years.
Egyptian weightlifter Sara Ahmed earned a silver medal in the women’s 81kg category, and Ivorian taekwondo athlete Cheick Sallah Cisse secured a bronze medal in the men’s +80kg division.
