The actress talked about a big surprise in her new book, ‘Thicker Than Water.’

Kerry Washington is sharing a big family secret that her parents didn’t tell her, and it really surprised her. This revelation is the main topic of her new book, “Thicker Than Water.” Before the book comes out later this month, Washington talked to People magazine about it. She said that she just found out not long ago that her real father is not the person she thought.

“It completely changed everything for me,” she said.

Kerry Washington found out about her parents’ secret when she told them she wanted to be on a TV show called “Finding Your Roots” with Henry Louis Gates Jr. This show on PBS uses DNA tests to learn about a person’s ancestors.

Washington’s mom, Valerie, and dad, Earl, talked to Gates about the secret. Gates suggested they tell Kerry privately, not on the show. In 2018, Kerry found out that her parents used a donor’s sperm because they had trouble having a baby. She said, “When I heard this, I thought, ‘Okay. This is my real story now.'”

Kerry Washington said she always had a feeling her parents were keeping something from her. She said, “I didn’t know my own story; I just felt like I was in the background of their story.” Her parents confessed they hadn’t planned to tell her before.

Thinking about this big news, Washington remembered feeling anxious and struggling with how she saw herself, and she also had problems with eating. She wondered if these difficulties were connected to somehow knowing her parents had a secret.

The 46-year-old said, “I felt like there was something about my body nobody was telling me.” Finding out this truth about her family inspired Kerry Washington to write her new book. At first, her parents weren’t very happy about it, but they became more encouraging as time passed.

She explained about “Thicker Than Water”: “This is me trying to make sense of my life so far, now that I have this new piece of information that feels like it completes the puzzle.”

The personal memoir is available on shelves on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and it is Washington’s first book.
