Harris Raises $81 Million After Biden Drops Out of Presidential Race
Since President Joe Biden announced he was leaving the presidential race, Vice-President Kamala Harris has seen a massive surge in donations.
Over $81 million was raised in just one day, marking the largest single-day fundraising record in U.S. presidential campaign history.
More than 888,000 people donated, with many giving less than $200 each. This surge in donations happened right after Biden’s exit on Sunday.
ActBlue, a donation platform, noted that grassroots supporters are very excited to back Harris as the Democratic nominee.
In the first five hours of her campaign, Harris’ team raised over $27.5 million. By the end of the day, this amount nearly doubled.
This is the highest online fundraising amount for Democrats since 2020, when a similar surge occurred after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death.
The increase in funds is a significant boost for the Democratic party, which had previously seen support drop after Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump. Many small donors had also reduced their contributions.
After Biden endorsed Harris, donations poured in quickly. A group called Win With Black Women raised over $1.5 million in just three hours to support Harris.
High-profile donors like Reid Hoffman and Alexander Soros have publicly backed Harris, praising her as the right choice for the Democratic nomination.
However, not everyone is fully on board. Some donors, like entrepreneur Vinod Khosla, want a more open selection process at the convention rather than a simple handover.
Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings has previously stated that delegates should choose a candidate who can win key swing states against Trump.
This fundraising boost shows that Harris is rallying significant support, but the campaign will need to maintain this momentum as the election approaches.
