AT&T Data Breach Exposes Call and Text Records of Millions

AT&T revealed that hackers accessed call and text records of nearly all 109 million AT&T Wireless customers between May and October 2022.

The breach, discovered in April 2023, involved illegally downloading and copying data to an external platform.

Although the stolen information did not include the content of calls or texts, it recorded details such as numbers contacted and interaction durations.

The delay in disclosing the breach was justified by national security concerns, according to the Justice Department.

AT&T expressed regret over the incident and assured customers that steps had been taken to secure systems against future breaches.

They emphasized that the stolen data was not believed to be publicly available.

Security experts cautioned that the compromised data could potentially reveal workplaces, approximate home locations, and connections such as colleagues and friends.

This breach follows a similar incident where data from 73 million customers was exposed in 2019.

AT&T pledged to notify affected customers and provided tools for users to check if their data was compromised. They also advised caution regarding requests for personal information via email or text.
