France’s far-right party, led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, is leading after the first round of parliamentary elections.
Their party, the National Rally (RN), got the most votes, ahead of left-wing and Macron’s alliances. RN aims to win 289 out of 577 seats in the National Assembly to have full control, but projections suggest they might not reach this majority.
Without a majority, RN can’t easily pass their plans, like immigration control and tax cuts.
President Macron, who didn’t need to call this election, risks losing power, as the high voter turnout shows the importance of this election. Some left-wing voters are upset by RN’s success.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal urged voters not to support RN in the next round. Other political leaders, like Jean-Luc Mélenchon of the left-wing alliance, also want to prevent RN from winning more seats.
The next round of voting will decide if RN can secure more seats or if other parties can block them. The outcome could lead to a hung parliament, with no single party having full control.
