If you want to keep your mind sharp as you age, watch out for these foods, according to brain health experts.
Fast Food: Burgers and fries might be tasty, but they’re bad for your brain. The oils used in fast food can create harmful particles that may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to Dr. Annie Fenn, MD, a brain health expert. Eating too much fast food can lead to inflammation that affects brain health.
Pastries and Baked Goods: Sugary treats like cookies and cakes are not good for your brain. Cheryl Mussatto, RD, says these “brain-draining foods” can hurt both brain and heart health. Excess sugar is linked to higher risks of dementia and stroke.
Artificial Sweeteners: Diet sodas and other products with artificial sweeteners like aspartame can harm your brain. Mussatto explains that these sweeteners can increase stress hormones and inflammation, which might affect mood and cognitive function.
If you often eat these types of foods, making small changes can help improve brain health. Studies show that switching to a healthier diet, like the Mediterranean diet, can benefit brain function even later in life.
