A former Florida sheriff’s deputy, Eddie Duran, has been arrested for fatally shooting a US Air Force member named Roger Fortson.

The shooting happened last May when Duran responded to a call at Fortson’s apartment complex. He has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm, which could lead to up to 30 years in prison if he’s convicted, as reported by BBC News.

Duran, who was a deputy at the time, tried to enter Fortson’s home and, upon finding Fortson holding a gun, fired multiple shots.

The incident was captured on body camera footage. The deputy’s actions were deemed unreasonable in an internal investigation, which led to his dismissal from the sheriff’s office.

Fortson’s mother hopes the case will lead to changes in how such situations are handled. Duran was fired shortly after the shooting, and it’s unclear if he has legal representation.
