You might want to rethink some of your shower habits. Parade explains that bathrooms are full of germs, not just around the toilet, but also on the shower floor, bathmat, and faucet.

A report from SafeHome.org reveals that your shower floor can have 60 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

However, according to Dr. Mark Loafman, as Parade highlights, these germs aren’t usually dangerous. He says we don’t need a perfectly clean bathroom, and it’s better to be exposed to common bacteria instead of constantly trying to kill them all, which could strengthen the surviving germs.

Parade also notes that while these bathroom germs may not harm you, some of your shower habits could be bad for your skin.

Dr. Amy Huang, a dermatologist, shares that it’s not necessary for most people to shower daily unless they sweat a lot or come into contact with irritants.

According to Harvard Medical School, showering too much can strip your skin of protective oils, leaving it dry and irritated, which could lead to infections.

Parade explains that other shower habits you should change include skipping washing your feet, as this can lead to fungal infections. Dr. Huang recommends washing your feet with soap, especially if they sweat a lot.

Parade also suggests shortening your showers because long, hot showers can dry out your skin. You should avoid scrubbing too hard or using harsh body scrubs, as this can irritate your skin and even cause infections if bacteria get trapped in loofahs.

Another common mistake, according to Parade, is using antibacterial soap. Dr. Loafman warns that these soaps can harm your skin’s natural defenses.

Instead, mild, unscented soap is better for your skin. Parade also stresses the importance of moisturizing right after showering, especially if you have dry skin, to help lock in moisture.

Lastly, Parade points out that you don’t need to wash your hair every day. For most people, washing every two or three days is enough.

Over-washing can make your hair dry and brittle. In short, Parade advises that taking care of your skin and making small changes to your shower routine can keep your skin healthy and avoid unnecessary damage.
