India has stopped giving visas to people from Canada because they say there are safety worries for their diplomats in Canada.
This comes after Canada suggested that India might be involved in the killing of a Sikh activist in Canada. BLS International, the group that deals with visa applications for India in Canada, said this in a letter to stock exchanges. They didn’t say when visas would start again.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that the Indian High Commission and consulates in Canada were facing safety threats, which is why they’ve stopped giving visas for now. They also said that the Canadian government should be responsible for keeping them safe.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said they were looking into possible links between the Indian government and the activist’s killing. India has said this is not true and that Canada hasn’t given any solid proof.
This situation has caused tension between India and Canada, leading to both countries sending each other’s diplomats away. This might cause some problems for their relationship.
The activist who was killed, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was a strong supporter of creating a separate place for Sikhs called Khalistan. This idea is not accepted by the Indian government and is seen as a danger to their national security. Nijjar was killed in June, but nobody has been arrested for it yet.
