Jim Gaffigan recently made bold jokes about Donald Trump while hosting the Al Smith Dinner, an event that raises money for Catholic charities in New York City.

Even though Trump was just a few feet away, Gaffigan didn’t hold back.

According to Parade, the comedian took shots at Trump’s past controversial remarks, including false claims that Haitian immigrants were eating pets in Ohio and his 2005 comments about groping women, which stirred up a lot of attention during his 2016 campaign.

One of Gaffigan’s standout jokes referred to Trump’s debate comment about migrants supposedly eating cats, saying, “This is the second time grabbing a kitty has been part of a campaign issue,” cleverly connecting the cat comment to Trump’s past scandal, Parade explains.

Gaffigan also joked about the atmosphere in the room, filled with wealthy and powerful people, saying it felt “oppressive” because of the “prestige, the wealth, and the allegations” surrounding the event.

He added humorously, “Don’t feel bad if you don’t have any allegations yet,” which made Trump smile, according to Parade.

While Trump seemed to take the jokes in stride, his wife, Melania, reportedly didn’t crack a smile during Gaffigan’s performance.

Parade notes that the tension was visible even though the event is known for playful roasting of political figures during election years.
