Chinese Teen, Kai Zhuang, Rescued in US After Cyber Kidnapping Scam

Kai Zhuang, a 17-year-old Chinese exchange student, was found freezing in a tent in rural Utah after falling victim to a cyber kidnapping scam.

His parents were extorted for around $80,000 by criminals who manipulated Kai into isolating himself. Police, concerned for his safety due to freezing temperatures, located him 25 miles north of Riverdale.

Despite not being physically present, the kidnappers monitored Kai through technology, convincing him and his parents of the danger.

After his rescue, Kai, checked for hypothermia, expressed a desire for a “warm cheeseburger” and to reconnect with his family.
