Russia-based websites posing as local American newspapers are spreading fake stories using AI, targeting the upcoming US election, according to a BBC investigation.
Led by a former Florida police officer now in Moscow, these sites published false claims, like Ukraine’s first lady buying a Bugatti with US aid money.
Despite being debunked, these stories went viral, influencing millions.
The operation uses AI to generate thousands of articles on fake news sites with American-sounding names, aiming to sow distrust and impact American politics, echoing previous Russian disinformation efforts.
