Joe Biden has renewed his call for Congress to ban assault rifles, including the type used in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
Trump was grazed by a bullet when a gunman shot at him from a rooftop during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. “An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump.
This is the same weapon that has killed many others, including children. It’s time to outlaw them,” Biden said at a Las Vegas convention.
After the shooting, Biden’s campaign paused for several days, halting verbal attacks and pulling TV ads, with many Democrats promoting a message of unity.
Speaking on Tuesday, Biden urged Americans to “lower the temperature” of heated political rhetoric but continued to criticize Trump at the NAACP convention, emphasizing the need for truth in politics.
He highlighted his administration’s achievement of record low Black unemployment in 2023 and reiterated his commitment to banning assault weapons, referencing his success in passing a similar ban in 1994.
Biden also mentioned the significant gun safety legislation he signed in 2022, which included enhanced background checks and other protections. However, he faces strong opposition from Republicans on the assault weapons ban.
Biden’s return to campaigning coincided with the Republican National Convention, where speakers like Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis united in support of Trump.
At a gun rights event, Trump’s campaign adviser, Chris LaCivita, promised to protect gun rights by appointing pro-gun judges if Trump wins the election. Trump has stated he would repeal Biden’s new gun regulations if elected.
Authorities are still investigating the motive of the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who managed to shoot at Trump from a rooftop 130 meters away.
An independent review of the Secret Service’s handling of the incident is underway, along with a Republican-led investigation in Congress.
