US President Joe Biden has granted pardons to 39 people convicted of non-violent crimes and reduced the sentences of almost 1,500 others.

This marks the largest number of pardons and sentence commutations issued by a president in one day, according to the White House.

Biden explained that those pardoned had shown rehabilitation and worked to make their communities stronger. The list of 39 pardons included individuals convicted of non-violent drug offenses, but the specific crimes were not revealed.

Many of those pardoned had already been released from prison and became advocates or community leaders after serving their sentences. One individual, for example, was convicted of a drug crime at age 21 but later became a successful Army and Air Force member and a dedicated volunteer.

Biden also commuted the sentences of 1,499 people, including some who had been placed in home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic and others serving sentences considered too long due to outdated laws. Biden said these individuals deserved a second chance.

This action follows Biden’s previous pardons, including those for people convicted of simple marijuana possession.

The president also pardoned military personnel and veterans convicted based on their sexual orientation.

The pardons also included Biden’s son, Hunter, who faced charges for tax fraud and gun crimes. Although controversial, Biden said the cases against his son were politically motivated.

Biden’s record of granting clemency has been relatively low compared to other presidents, but he promised to take more steps in the coming weeks .
